Antique Table Top Drawers Painted with Decoupaged Nantucket Whaling Scene
This is a handsome antique table top chest which is ideal for use in an office or workshop, it was originally designed for use as a portable collectors chest but would also be perfect for small tools, paintbrushes or sewing supplies, a versatile piece which could serve a variety of purposes in any home.
The chest dates to the mid 19th century and is made of pine and mixed woods, it is heavy and solid, despite its compact size, and has an evocative look well suited to a nautically inspired office or study.
The chest is fitted with arrangement of seven drawers which are all finished with small turned wooden handles.
The front and top of the chest have been painted and decoupaged at some point in time, the painting to the front depicts a whaling vessel setting sail from Nantucket, the ship might possibly be the famous ship 'Essex' which set sail on its last fateful mission in the summer of 1819. The ship was sunk by an angry sperm whale in 1820 and the story bacame the inspiration for Moby Dick.
The top left hand drawer opens to reveal the painted eye of a whale and to the top of the chest are small painted whales, which alludes to the number of 'kills' made by the whalers on board.
The chest is in good condition with various marks and and small areas of damage.
The finish is very well aged and full of character.
